Course Description:
This class will define brief therapy and provide counselors with tools to use as a preventative approach with clients that are beginning to establish harmful substance use patterns. The class will discuss screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment protocols within health care settings, and will review three strategies for conducting brief therapy: Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive-Behavioral, and Solution Focused. Participants will learn how to apply these strategies in order to focus on what the client is willing to change and to offer a more individualized approach. Additionally, participants will discuss how to sustain a model of brief therapy within their agencies, and how to build a more comprehensive bridge for services between health care and behavioral health providers.
